United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the European Union, has began a 2-day training for head teachers, teachers and other stakeholders on mitigating climate change in schools.
In a presentation at the training on Wednesday, Dr Ummukalthum Muhammed of Environmental Sciences Department Bayero University Kano, said the training is crucial.
She stressed that the 3-days training will create awareness on climate change and its impacts, with an aim to find local solutions.
“It will open the minds of the stakeholders that include the teachers and members of the Schools Based Management commitees, in finding ways of remediating climate through tree planting.
“The training will provide them enough space to come up with strategies to deploy, in their respective schools and carry the school children along,” Mrs Muhammed said.
She added that the training is aimed at allowing the schools to come up with their local solutions based on their understanding of the menace.
“So far, its queit I pressie how they were able to contextualise it in their environment and they fully understood the role of the community on tackling climate change,” she explained.
A participant who spoke with our Correspondent, explained that the training has provided them with insight on issues that affect the environment which make people vulnerable to illness.
He revealed that he has learnt a lot from the training and is ready to fully take part in mobilising not just schools but the larger community, in tackling climate change in his community.
The training has 54 psrticipants in attendance from eight schools in Hadejia and other areas.
The training is sponsored by the UNICEF/EU, under the Education and Youth Empowerment (EYEp) project.
