Female farmers in Chuwasu and Baranda community in Taura local government area of Jigawa state, have appealed for the support of Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), to provide them with Rice milling machines to begin full time rice production.

The farmers made the appeal when a team of officials of the SAA and the media visted the communities for the SAA’s annual media field day in Dutse, Birnin Kudu and Taura local government areas.

The coordinator of the Chuwasu Women rice farmers association, Mrs Uwani Adamu, said they witnessed a bumper harvest of rice during the 2025 harvest due to the improved rice seeds provided to them by SAA.

She explained that the new farming innovations provided by the association which differ from their mode of farming, also contributed to the bumper harvest.

Mrs Adamu explained that now that the women produce a large quantity of rice in the area, they have a challenge of processing the rice by themselves.

According to her, “We have been trained on rice processing by some organisations and the SAA, yet we were not provided with the machines to process our own rice.

“We appeal to SAA to come to provide the rice milling machine to our community, to curtail losses we encounter while taking the paddy for processing in distant communities,” she requested.

Another female farmer in Baranda community in Dutse, Mrs Amina Abdulrahman, expressed gratitude to the association for including them in their interventions.

She said, “before they came to our community, we were only assisting our husbands to process farm produce, but they organised us into groups and guides us to venture into farming in groups.

“The formations to us are more safe because we have passed individual losses and record huge profit when we farm in group,” she explained.

While speaking, the District Head of the area, Mr Turaki Ali, commended the association for empowering their women with skills and all necessary support.

In response, the Deputy Country Director of Sasakawa Africa Association, Dr Abdulhamid Gambo, expressed delight over the positive feed back on improved harvest in the area.

The Deputy Director commended the resilience of the farmers in the area, who accepted the new innovations, improved seeds and technologies provided to them.

He explained that the success of the  intervention was achieved with the support of the Jigawa state government , who had assisted them with a funding of $100,000 in 2025.

According to him, “The state has been supporting our interventions and had allowed us full access to all its structures, which made our intervention easier,” Gambo said.

He pledged continue support to farmers through their interventions along the three strategic pillars of regenerative agriculture, nutrition-sensitive agriculture and market reoriented agriculture across Jigawa state and beyond.

The SAA is an International organisation, supporting agricultural development in 17 African countries for over 35 years.

Its currently working under strategic plan 2021-2025 with Regenerative Agriculture (RA), Nutrition-sensitive Agriculture (NSA) and Market-oriented Agriculture (MOA), as core pillars and operates in four focus countries including Nigeria.
