Gov. Umar Namadi of Jigawa state has said that the Majia tanker explosion, has made a total of 42 women as widows and 133 orphans, out of which 70 are males and 63 are females.
Namadi made this known in a speech in Majia, while flagging off cash donation of N839.7 million to the affected victims of the October 2024 incidence.
He explained that no fewer than 160 households of the 210 victims of the incidence, received the cash donation which will sure reduced the pains and ease their hardships as they have lost their bread winners.
The governor also explained that the highlights of the demographic profiles of those affected, showed that the event had an impact on 167 households, killed 140 people and hurt 70 more.
“It was established that 33 of the deceased persons were married and  31 of them have children, all left behind as orphans.
“The committee established by the government to investigate and report on the remote and immediate causes of the inferno, has made several recommendations on mitigating the future occurrence of such incidents.

“On our part, we will continue to institute measures in line with the recommendations, including having a permanent contingency plan for emergency preparedness and response to cushioning the gravity of disasters when they inevitably occur.

“We pray that their souls continue to rest in peace with our Lord. May their final abode be Aljannatul Firdous. May Allah grant their families the fortitude to continue to bear the irreparable loss of their loved ones,” he said.

Regarding financial support offered, Namadi disclosed that as of 26th March 2025, total redeemed cash donations amounted to N839,686,680.

Each affected individual he said, is expected to receive roughly N4 million, with N500,000 disbursed in cash and N3.5 million deposited into individual accounts opened for the victims at Jaiz Bank.

“For those that are deceased, payment would be made to their guardians, either as parents or next of kin and survivors would, whenever feasible, receive theirs in person.

“Donations previously received, comprising of assorted relief materials, mostly in the form of perishable foodstuffs and other essential commodities, have already been distributed to those affected,” the Governor stated.

He further stressed that maintaining transparency in the distribution process is crucial and the government would publish a comprehensive list of all the redeemed pledges made by individuals and groups.

He however, urged the public and transport sector stakeholders, to adopt stricter safety measures to avoid occurrence of such incidences.
