Jigawa state government has said that it has concluded plans to immunize over 1.5 million children below the age of five, in November round of polio immunization exercise in the state.
The Executive Secretary, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Shehu Sambo, announced this at a one-day Media Dialogue organised by the state with support from United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
Represented by the Assistant Health educator of the state, Mr Nura Ado, the ES said a total number of 1,516,244 children are expected to be immunised within the period.
He explained that the November immunised is expected to be conducted along with the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH)week, where health services would be provided to pregnant women.
Dr Sambo appealed for media support for ghe effective coverage of the exercise, in addition to clearing of misconceptions amongst caregivers.
In his remarks, Rahama Farah, Chief of UNICEF Kano Field Office, commended Jigawa state for recording a 58% reduction in cVPV2 cases in 2024.
The Chief however, cautioned that polio remains a concern, with 72 cases reported in 14 states so far in 2025, thus the need to strengthen coverage.
He appealed to local government chairmen, to closely monitor the exercise to ensure success, appealing for mass media mobilise for parents.
Mr Father further appealed for collective responsibility on the part of all stakeholders, to end polio transmission in Jigawa state and other states across Nigeria.
Also speaking on behalf of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Mrs Firdaus Aminu, commended the state for the mobilization.
She extended best wishes and declared full support of the agency to ensure success of the exercise in the state.
The November polio immunization exercise will be conducted between November 27 to December 3, 2025 and will be conducted alongside the MNCH week.
It was gathered that about 2, 015 teams of adhoc staff accross the 27 local government areas of the state, will conduct the House to House immunization as well as provide the other health services.
